For years (31 to be precise), the Canadian dollar (known as the Loonie) has been worth less than the U.S. dollar.
Well, last week, the Loonie overtook the greenback and, not surprisingly, unleashed a torrent of giddiness, pride and general smugness. For the moment, the strength of the Loonie is something that Canadians can savor and enjoy. It may be bad news for the economy (tourism, cross-border trade) but it's great for a country that doesn't like to always be playing second fiddle to its southern neighbor.
Now, if one of its hockey or baseball teams could have a good season, things would really be looking up.
